The Punjab Cricket Association Stadium which is located at Mohali is also popularly known as Mohali Stadium. The Mohali Stadium was established in year 1993 and on its inauguration day on Nov 22, 1993 first One Day International match was played between India and South Africa in Hero Cup Series. The stadium has capacity of almost Twenty thousand spectators.
There was a small river passing through the land on which Mohali Stadium was constructed. It was mostly a muddy land. the proposal of construction of stadium on this marshy land was initially laughed at. Somehow work started for construction of stadium and it was completed in less than three years. The Mohali Stadium is home for Kings XI Punjab and Punjab team. The stadium has total Sixteen flood lights but these are low height as compared to other cricket stadiums. Its reason is that Chandigarh International Airport is not for away from stadium and to avoid risk of airplane colliding with pillars. The PCA Stadium has North End and South End Pavilion. Out of total 13.5 acres of area of stadium the playing area is little less than 4 acres. Rest of the area is used for Pavilion, stands for spectators, Gym, Swimming pool, Practice area, Office, Players rest rooms, Restaurant & bar and parking etc. The pitch of Mohali Stadium is idle condition for fast bowlers because outfield has lush green grass. This helps ball to keep its shine for longer. But with time pitch slows down and it turns out to be paradise for batsmen.
Due to PCA stadium Mohali located in residential area of Sector 63 Mohali, it lacks parking facility. It makes streets overcrowded during any international cricket match, cars are parked all around in the surrounding residential area as well. Therefor PCA decided and gave go ahead for building a new stadium which is much bigger than existing stadium and is near Mollanpur. It is named as Maharaja Yadvindra Singh International Cricket Stadium. Stadium was supposed to be ready by 2020 but may be due to covid outbreak its work is delayed. The outer infrastructure of the stadium is almost ready, and Probability might get inaugurated in 2022. The existing airport road is being extended till new stadium as well. It will pass through Sectors 125 and 123 Mohali.
